Shelter directors: Collaboration needed to combat homelessness | News
Local homeless shelter directors say collaboration between counties is what is needed to ensure individuals experiencing homelessness in the region are getting the services they need. Daniel Pitino Shelter executive director Michele Johnston and St. Benedict’s Shelter executive director Harry Pedigo said they work to provide shelter to anyone who needs it in the community if there is availability, regardless of where they’re from. Of the 136 individuals the Pitino shelter has served since the beginning of the year, programs director Cheryl Moore said 41 have been from outside of Owensboro-Daviess County. SOCHE, Dayton Foodbank collaborate to feed veterans struggling with food insecurity
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) partnered with community organizations to help veterans fight food insecurity during the pandemic. In 2015, SOCHE collaborated on a system of organizations called VetsLink to help connect former military members to resources. A new position on campus aims to provide support and resources to students who find themselves victims of crimes or other traumatic events. Anna Brennan is embedded in the CU Police Department while rostered in the Office of Victim Assistance (OVA). In her position, which started in June 2021, Anna offers “in-the-moment emotional support for people impacted by traumatic experiences,” even responding onscene after an incident. From there, she can work with officers and victims, providing an empathetic ear, informing victims of their rights and connecting them to OVA and other community resources for longer-term support.
